BNZ Update
21 September 2007
KEY POINT:
- Included with this update is a recruitment kit and some flyers to help you encourage potential new members to join Finsec. The kit is designed to help you talk to staff in your site about joining the union. The flyers outline our three key issues; fairer targets, more staff and better pay, and explain why it is important to join.
ACTION:
Please distribute these flyers among non-members in your branch or worksite and talk with them about its contents . Use the recruitment kit to talk to non-members in your site about joining Finsec.
Grow membership to win
We believe an essential part of our campaign to help BNZ become a Better Bank with fairer targets, more staff and better pay is recruiting new members. Earlier this year hundreds of Westpac non-members joined the union and built our power to achieve pay increases of up to 11.8% to the 100% mark for some staff. In that campaign union members were active in recruiting to the union.
If every BNZ delegate recruits one member to the union we will gain over 200 new members, which will increase our current membership by over 15%.
Recruitment recourses
Included with this Update is a recruitment kit and some flyers that you can give to non--members. Each flyer explains the three key issues that Finsec is campaigning on to help BNZ become a Better Bank: staffing, targets and pay.
It also outlines what the Better Banks campaign is all about and it has a space for you to leave some contact details so potential new members can come back and ask you questions if they want. Please fill this out by adding you name, phone and email if appropriate.
You can recruit
Finsec members are legally entitled to talk with non-members about the union and what we are up to at the moment. In fact it is really normal for this to happen and is common place in other banks in our industry and in worksites right across the country.
Using the flyer
Flyers always have more impact if you talk about them with the person you are giving them to rather than just leaving them on their desk or in their mail. Use the recruitment kit to talk to staff about our issues as well as giving them a flyer.
Then build a plan to win
Explain that Finsec members have a plan to improve things for the bank, its customers and its workers. That plan is called Better Banks . Ask them if they think we make things better by doing nothing or by working together so the bank sees that we all want the same things?
Ask them to join
The reason most people have not joined a union is because nobody has asked them. You can get Finsec membership forms here.

Thank you for your work so far as a delegate and thank you in advance for your work building our membership so that we can build power to win.
